Best Winter Activities to Try in Boise in 2024

The Top 10 Winter Activities in Boise You Must Try

Growing up in the Southwest, I’m more of a Sunshine activity type of girl, but I’ve learned to find fun during Idaho’s colder months.  Boise and the surrounding Treasure Valley enjoy a mild season, but within just a short drive you can layer up and dive into the winter wonderland that is Boise, Idaho. Whether you’re a seasoned snow enthusiast or someone looking to make the most out of the colder months, here are my top 10 picks for winter activities in and around Boise that you must try this year if you haven’t already.

Skiing at Bogus BasinSkiing at Bogus Basin: Just 16 miles north of Boise, Bogus Basin offers fantastic skiing opportunities. Whether you’re carving down the slopes or enjoying the scenic chairlift rides, it’s a perfect spot for both beginners and experts.  Note:  It can get busy during the Weekends and holidays.  Try a weekday for fresh powder and practically no lift lines.

Downtown Ice Skating: Glide into the holiday spirit at the seasonal ice rink – Boise’s Glide on Grove in Downtown Boise. It’s a magical experience, especially with the city lights sparkling around you.

Boise Winter Activities Outdoors

Tubing at Eagle Island State Park: Grab a tube and enjoy the thrilling snow slide at Eagle Island State Park put together by Gateway Parks. It’s a blast for both kids and adults and a great way to enjoy the snowy landscape.

Best Hot Springs Near Boise

Hot Springs Day Trip: Idaho is home to numerous natural hot springs. A day trip to nearby Kirkham Hot Springs or The Springs in Idaho City offers a steamy escape from the cold.  Personal Note: The Springs in Idaho City is probably my favorite thing to do in Idaho in Winter, ok, Fall and Spring too.  It’s also one of the reasons we moved here.
The Idaho Botanical Garden’s Winter Garden aGlow: See the botanical garden transformed into a vibrant display of over half a million sparkling lights. This event is a true highlight of the season and a great outing for families.

Attend the Winter Carnival in McCall:Held annually, this carnival features elaborate snow sculptures, parades, and plenty of winter sports competitions. It’s well worth the short drive!  It starts in February and lasts a few days so it’s a good idea to book early if you plan on staying overnight.
If you are looking for a more laid-back experience why not try these great spots to warm up in Winter or browse the most unique gifts and finds in the area.

Brewery Tour: Warm up with a local craft beer tour. Boise’s brewery scene is booming, and many spots offer cozy settings perfect for a cold day.  Payette Brewing Company on the Greenbelt is one of my favorites, but there are just so many around the Valley.

Shopping at the Boise Winter Farmer’s Market and the Wintry Market.Support local artisans and find unique gifts and treasures for your home or friends (or stomach) at this vibrant market.  It has a great atmosphere and brings out the best artsy side of Boise.

Movie Night at The Flicks or Egyptian Theatre: Cozy up with a classic film or catch a new release at one of Boise’s beloved cinemas. The Flicks and the Egyptian Theatre offer a warm refuge and a touch of nostalgia on a cold winter’s night.

So, bundle up and make the most of this winter in Boise. Whether it’s thrilling snow sports or cozy indoor activities, our city has something special for everyone during the cooler months. Stay warm and have fun!
